Babel towers over Golden Globes
Babel was the surprise winner at today's Golden Globe nominations, finishing ahead of more fancied contenders Flags of Our Fathers and The Departed. The globe-hopping, ensemble drama from the Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu led the charge with seven nominations, including best film, best actor (Brad Pitt) and best supporting actress for the Japanese newcomer Rinko Kikuchi.
Although a prestigious event in its own right, the Globes are traditionally seen as the most reliable pointer to the Oscars that follow. Last year's ceremony provided a springboard for Philip Seymour Hoffman, Reese Witherspoon, George Clooney and Rachel Weisz, who all went on to win acting Oscars. But the Globe for best dramatic film went to Brokeback Mountain, which surprisingly lost out to Crash at the Academy Awards.
The 64th Golden Globes will be presented on January 15th, 2007.
