Alejandro González Iñárritu directed and produced Babel from an idea by Guillermo Arriaga and Iñárritu. Iñárritu is the son of Hector and Luz-Maria, husband of Maria Eladia and father of Maria Eladia and Eliseo.
Iñárritu burst on to the international film scene in 2000 with his debut feature, Amores Perros, a Spanish-language film from Mexico that won acclaim and ignited box-offices worldwide, while signaling the arrival of a unique filmmaker. Amores Perros was nominated for an Academy Award as "Best Foreign Language Film" and received over 53 of the most prestigious awards from all over the world, including BAFTAs, the Golden Globes, Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Edinburgh, San Sebastian and Toronto. Iñárritu's follow-up film, 21 Grams, which he directed, co-wrote and produced, starred Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro and Naomi Watts. Both Del Toro and Watts received Oscar nominations for their roles in the film and Penn won the Jury Prize for “Best Actor” at the Venice Film Festival.
Iñárritu also wrote, directed and produced two short films in 2001and 2002, respectively. “Powder Keg”, a short film that was part of the BMW advertising project, included Wong Kar-Wai, Ang Lee, Guy Richie and John Frankenheimer, and won the Cyber Lion Grand Prix award at Cannes 2002 and three Clio Awards. His second short film “Darkness” was included in the multipart feature 11'09”01, which received a Cesar Award nomination, and included such filmmakers as Ken Loach, Samira Malhmalbaf, Claude Lelouch and Shohei Imamura.
Born in Mexico City in 1963, Iñárritu began his career in 1986 as the host of an eclectic music program at top-rated Mexican radio station, WFM. He also studied filmmaking and theater, while using his extensive musical and storytelling knowledge to compose music for Mexican features.
Mr. González Iñárritu lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two children.
